Apple Nike + iPod Sport Kit and Accessories

The Apple Nike + iPod Sport Kit is an awesome system for casual as well as seasoned walkers, joggers, and runners. It's comprised of a sensor and a receiver. The receiver is only required for the iPod nano. It's built into the iPod touch. The Nike + software uploads from the receiver to the iPod nano but is pre-installed on the iPod touch. To participate in the Nike + iPod experience you'll need the following:

• An iPod nano (On Amazon) or iPod touch (On Amazon)
• The sensor which you attach to or insert in a running shoe to detect movement. It comes in the Sport Kit or you can buy it separately.
• The receiver in the Sport Kit that attaches to the iPod nano. It receives the signal from the sensor and also contains the software that automatically uploads to the iPod nano. (The receiver and software is pre-installed in the iPod touch.)
• Nike + Ready Shoes (or other Sport Kit compatible shoes) with a pocket under the sockliner for the sensor or a case to hold the sensor on any running shoe.

If you have an iPod nano, there are 3 possible ways that you can buy the above items on Amazon to get what you need to enjoy the Nike + iPod Sport Kit experience (see right column for most items):

• Buy the Nike + iPod Sport Kit and the Tune Belt Bundle (contains an armband and a shoe pouch) OR
• Buy the Sport Kit and any of three armbands (Nike + Sport Armband, TuneBelt Armband, or Tuneband Armband) and the Grantwood Technology's Shoe Pouch. These armbands have enough room to accommodate the receiver when it is attached to the iPod nano OR
• Buy the Sport Kit and any of the three armbands for the iPod nano and Nike + Ready Shoes or other compatible shoes with a place for the sensor

If you have an iPod touch, there are 2 possible ways that you can buy the above items on Amazon (see right column for most items):

• Buy a sensor (see right column) and any of the armbands for the iPod touch and Grantwood Technology's Shoe Pouch
• Buy a sensor (see right column) and any of the armbands for the iPod touch and Nike + Ready Shoes or other compatible shoes with a place for the sensor

Here are some features that impressed me:

• The voiced notifications of duration and distance of workout segments.
• The voiced rewards praising you on accomplishments such as longest run.
• The functionality of the software.

Here are some comments regarding the use of the Sport Kit:

• You can't see the screen of the nano very well in daylight but the voice prompts are sufficient to keep you informed of your progress during your run. Besides the automatic progress reports, you can get and update anytime by pressing the center button.
• You can set up new templates for workouts, like "45 minute workout", "320 calorie workout", or "3 mile workout", but these templates cannot be erased. Only the specific workouts themselves can be erased by holding down the center button to pull up a menu and scrolling to erase.
• To adjust the volume while you're running, it may be easier to pause the workout by pressing the start/pause button and then adjusting the volume. Scrolling the wheel to adjust the volume while the workout is in progress may result in inadvertent clicks on the menu or fast forward/back buttons.
• While running to The JogTunes Indie Podcast or other shows with voice content, it's probably better to use the "Basic Workout" template. This eliminates the automatic time and distance progress voiced comments that interrupt podcast content when you use the time or distance workout templates.
